Salzburg nestles just north of the Alps on Austria's border with Germany. Renowned for its Baroque architecture, it was the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) and the setting for the award-winning musical, The Sound of Music (1965).
Naturally, this historic and picturesque city is something of a mecca for classical music lovers, especially at its twice-yearly festivals.
Often described as "the greatest music festival in the world", the main Salzburg Festival is a summer event. In 2015, it occurred between 18th July and 30th August. The festival in its present form was inaugurated on 22nd August 1920, but its heritage goes all the way back to the 19th century when the city held a regular celebration of Mozart. In 2013, the Salzburg Festival had more than 288,000 fans from 73 countries.* The programme features opera, drama and concert music, and some 2015 highlights included Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors and Verdi's Il Trovatore.
There is also a shorter festival held every year at Whitsun; in 2016, this will be 13th-16th May and will feature West Side Story performed by the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela and Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet performed by the Stuttgart Ballet.
